PURPOSE:To make automatic detection in the shortest time irrespective of the presence or absense or of a leader tape by providing a test signal oscillator and an amplitude detector for reproduction signal and performing automatic searching of a magnetic tape by the use of the amplitude of the reproduced test signal. CONSTITUTION:A low-frequency oscillator 9 for generating test signal and a reproduction signal amplitude detector 14 are provided. First, when the amplitude larger than the prescribed reproduction signal amplitude or equal thereto is obtained at the point of time when the recording and reproducing of the signal for test is started, the automatic searching for the characteristics of the tape is started immediately. When it is below the prescribed reproduction signal amplitude at the point of time when the recording and reproducing of the signal for test is started, the operation of detecting the reproduction signal amplitude is continued, and after lapse of a fixed time, the automatic searching is started from the point of time when the signal above the prescribed reproduction signal amplitude is obtained. If in this case the reproduction signal amplitude does not rise more than the determined amplitude despite lapse of the prescribed time, an alarm is made and the automatic searching does not take place. With such constitution, the automatic detection is made in the shortest time irrespective of the presence or absense of the leader tape.
