Abstract
PURPOSE: To manufacture perfluoro (3-methyltetrahydrofuran) with a good yield by electrolytic fluorination of pivalic acid, 2-methylbutyric acid, or their derivative in anhydrous hydrofluoric acid.
CONSTITUTION: Pivalic acid, 2-methylbutyric acid, or their derivative (e.g., an acid halide, ester, amide, etc.) is dissolved in anhydrous hydrofluoric acid, and then the solution is subjected to an electrolytic fluorination, whereby perfluoro (3-m-thyltetrahydrofuran) is formed in a gaseous form, together with perfluoro (2-methylbutyryl fluoride), fluorocarbons, OF2, and COF2. The gas so formed is passed through an iron tube packed with NaF pellets to remove the accompanying HF, passed through gas-washing bottles to remove OF2 and COF2, and then cooled by liquefied nitrogen and collected. The collected substance is refined by distillation and further separated and purified by a preparative gas chromatography.
