Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the large quantity of a reformed gas to improve the low temperature starting property of an engine by oxidizing the reformed gas or alcohol with a catalyst and heating the reforming device with the heat generated.
CONSTITUTION: An exhaust catalyst 16 is provided in an exhaust pipe 7, and a reformed gas nozzle 17 and an alcohol nozzle 18 are provided at the upstream thereof. Upon starting the engine 1, a reformed gas is supplied into the inner parts of the engine 1 and the exhaust pipe 7 by a controller 14, and the engine 1 starts a stable operation. Further, surplus air within the exhaust gas and a reformed gas supplied through the reformed gas nozzle 17 react with each other by the exhaust catalyst 16 and generate heat. When the exhaust catalyst reaches a temperature above the predetermined value, alcohol is supplied through the alcohol nozzle 18, and subjected to an oxidation reaction by the catalyst. The exhaust gas is heated to a higher temperature, and heats the reforming device 8 to produce a large quantity of the reformed gas. Accordingly, even at a low temperature, the engine 1 can be readily started.
