Abstract

PURPOSE: To form the titled body free from devitrification even at high temp. and suitable for use as a light-weight heat insulating material, etc. by adding a specified amount of nitride to SiO2-B2O3-R2O (R is an alkali metal) porous glass powder followed by sintering.
CONSTITUTION: SiO2-B2O3-R2O glass is phase-separated by heating and freed of an acid-soluble phase by leaching to form porous glass, and this glass is pulverized. To the resulting porous glass powder is added 1W15wt% one or more among boron nitride, silicon nitride and aluminum nitride, and they are molded into a desired shape and sintered to obtain a sintered cellular glass body. When the molding is sintered, it is preferably heated at a relatively low heating rate, held once at about 900W1,000°C for about 3hr, heated to the sintering temp., and sintered.
