Abstract
PURPOSE:To improve sealing performance and enhance the purifying performance of a catalysting substance by a method wherein an elastic seal consisting of graphite or carbonic fibers and of high-temperature-foamed ceramic is provided between an exhaust-gas purifying monolithic catalyst and a catalyst case. CONSTITUTION:The outside periphery of the monolithic catalyst 2 purifying the exhaust gas from the internal combustion engine of an automobile and the like is supported elastically by a wire net 3 and the end surface thereof is held by an L-shaped metal ring 4 fixed to the case 1. Between the ring 4 and the end surface of the catalyst are located a metal ring plate 42 and an elastic seal member 41, whereby the catalyst is supported elastically. The elastic seal member 41 consists of graphite or carbonic fibers and of high-temperature-foamed ceramic. Since the ceramic is foamed by the temperature of the exhuast gas and fixes the fibers, twisting about fibrous material, the fibrous material is prevented from being blown away and is given durability for long-term employment under high temperature.
