Abstract

PURPOSE:To continuously manufacture a long-sized hollow steel wire for a twisted spring at a low cost by continuously forming a tape of carbon steel or alloy steel followed by drawing and proper heat treatments. CONSTITUTION:Tape 1 made of carbon steel or alloy steel is continuously fed to forming roll 3 from reel 12, formed into pipe shape, and joined by seam welding the butted faces with welding machine 4. The resulting pipe 2 is annealed by heating at 400-700 deg.C for a short time in heating furnace 5. By this annealing the sstructure of the weld zone is converted into a tempered structure with high workability. Pipe 2 is then air cooled and continuously drawn to a prescribed diameter with drawing unit 7 at ordinary or elevated temp. by passing through dies 6 once-several times. Drawn pipe 2 is heated to 800-1,000 deg.C with heater 8 to austenitize the material, and immediately it is passed through vessel 9 filled with a cooling medium such as water or oil to convert the austenite into martensite. It is successively tempered at 200-450 deg.C with tempering unit 10 and coiled with coiler 10.
