Abstract
PURPOSE:To impart water absorption and retention characteristics to a substrate, by coating or mixing a water-insoluble material such as paper, a synthetic resin, soil or wood with a water-absorbing high-molecular material. CONSTITUTION:100pts.wt. Water-insoluble substrate is coated or mixed with 0.01-200pts.wt. water-absorbing high-molecular material (e.g. a graft copolymer of polyvinyl alcohol with polyacrylic acid, or crosslinked polyacrylic acid) with absorbs at least 100 times as much water as its own weight in water and has a ratio of water retention to water absorption of 0.5 or more, in order to enhance water absorption and retention characteristics of the substrate. For example, the above treatment can be applied to a disposable diaper or a disposable tampon to enhance its water absorption and retention characteristics, or can be applied to building wall materials composed of a synthetic resin or wood to prevent sweating. Further, the above treatment can be applied to soil in order to modify it and to reduce the frequency of sprinkling of water.
