PURPOSE:To obtain stable pictures by providing a voltage-controlled oscillating circuit for fast-forwarding playback and rewindig playback, and by controlling the turning speed of a rotary video head by detecting variation in tape speed with a playback control signal. CONSTITUTION:A reproduced horizontal synchronizing signal from input terminal 30 is divided by two at FF31 and supplied to detecting circuit 33 via resonating circuit 32. This detection output is converted into a DC voltage corresponding to the frequency fluctuations of the horizontal synchronizing signal and the voltage is applied to the resonance point control terminal of resonating circuit 35 after being amplified 34. Resonating circuit 35 set the frequency range of oscillating circuit 36. Switch circuit 37 provided to resonating circuit 35 is turned on for fast-forwarding playback, rewinding playback, etc., and switch circuit 39 which turns on the output of quartz oscillator 38 in stationary playback and recording is provided. Consequently, quartz oscillator 38 is used in normal mode and a signal extracted from the horizontal synchronizing signal is supplied from oscillating circuit 36 to head servo circuit 40 in fast-forward or rewinding playback mode, so that the stable playback output can be obtained in either mode.
