Abstract

PURPOSE: To form hardened layer of a desired hardness on the surface of a titanium or titanium alloy strip without causing oxidative coloration on the surface by annealing the strip in an ambient gas containing N or Ar gas containing a small amount of O2.
CONSTITUTION: A cold-rolled titanium or titanium alloy strip is coiled up and then subjected to a continuous annealing treatment at 650W750°C in Ar gas containing 30W100ppm of O2 or N2 or a mixture of Ar and N2 as an annealing ambient gas. Since the heating temperature is comparatively low, no oxide or nitride of Ti is formed on the surface of the strip and therefore, no coloration involved occurs on the surface. Also, since O2, N2, or both in the ambient gas are solidity dissolved on the surface of the strip, a hardened layer of a high hardness is formed on the surface of the strip, thereby preventing the surface of the strip from being flowed.
