Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare an ammonium nitrate mother liquor containing substantially no chromium from nitric acid containing chromium ions as a raw material, by neutralizing the niric acid with ammonia to pH 0W4 primarily, adding metallic iron and/or a ferrous salt to the neutralized nitric acid, and then neutralizing the acid with ammonia secondarily.
CONSTITUTION: Ammonia is added to nitric acid containing chromium ions at the deposition temperature of ammonium nitrate to 130°C and neutralized to pH 0W4 primarily. Metallic iron, e.g. iron powder, and/or a ferrous salt, e.g. ferrous nitrate, in an amount of about 3.3 times or more that of the total chromium present in the acid are added to the neutralized acid, and ammonia is then added to neutralize the acid to pH about 7 secondarily. The formed precipitate is filtered and removed to give the aimed ammonium nitrate mother liquor.
