Then, when the escalator is operated, working piece 14 moves as rail 11 moves, and then passes by switch 6. At this time, working piece 14 operates switch 6 to stop the operation of the escalator. Next, the distance between working piece 14 having stopped and switch 6 is measured, so that the braking distance from the arrival of a stop command can accurately be measured.
