Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain titled emulsion which does not form coagulations during polymerization and forms films having excellent water resistance, heat resistance and weather resistance, by empolying a vinyl polymer modified with a tetrahydrophthalic anhydride type compound as an emulsifier.
CONSTITUTION: To an aqueous solution of 5W100pts.wt. modified vinyl polymer, acid value about 30W300, average MW500W100,000, having, in its side chains, groups of the formula, wherein R is H or CH3, X is O or NH and M is H or a basic cation, are added 100pts.wt. monomer such as a (meth)acrylic acid ester or styrene and a radical polymerization initiator. The resulting mixture is emulsion-polymerized to form an emulsion. Said modified vinyl polymer is prepared by, for example, copolymerizing a suitable vinyl monomer with a monomer obtained by esterifying a hydroxyalkyl (meth)acrylate with cis-Δ4-tetrahydrophthalic anhydride, and then neutralizing the resulting copolymer with a base such as NaOH.
EFFECT: This emulsion has excellent mechanical stability and storage stability.
USE: Paints, adhesives and paper treating agents.
