Abstract

PURPOSE: To control the flowing-in of powder by supervising the condition right under the mold for the continuous casting by the use of an optical device thereby detecting the continuously coating condition with the powder.
CONSTITUTION: The flowing-in of powder is controlled by optically detecting the powder coating condition of a mold surface and adjusting the high-frequency vibration intensity and/or vibration pattern to be applied to the mold. Namely, at the time of injecting molten steel into the mold 1 and successively drawing an ingot 3 downward, the coating condition of the powder 13 on the mold 3 surface is observed right under the mold 1 by an optical device 5. This is sent via an ITV camera 2 to an arithmetic processing unit 6 which in turn calculates the rate of coating. The frequency or power is then changed by a frequency regulator 10 or a power regulator 11 manually or automatically and the high frequencies are applied to the mold 1 by a transmitter 12 by means of a vibrator 14. The powder coating rate of 60W80% is suitable and the target area rate is set at 60W80%. These prevent the generation of the longitudinal micro-cracking of the ingot surface.
