Abstract

PURPOSE: To enable high quality tack arc welding to be accomplished efficiently in a pipe making process for spiral steel pipes by down-welding the edge joining part of a sheet steel from both sides in the positions of 8 o'clock W 10 o'clock.
CONSTITUTION: A hot-rolled coil 1 is uncoiled to a strip shape to make a striplike sheet steel 2. After both edge parts thereof are worked to a required width, the sheet steel is fed into a forming part 4 by pinch rolls 3, and is formed to a required curvature by forming rolls 5. Thence, the joining in both edge parts of the sheet steel 2 are tack-welded from both inside and outside by an inside welding device 6 and an outside welding device 8 between 8 o'clock W 10 o'clock towared the upper stream side of the pipe 7 to be formed. If in this case the inside surface is first tack-welded by slightly shifting the weld positions upward or downard, penetration is effected by the outside welding on account of preheating effect. The pipe 7 having undergone this tack welding is subjected to regular welding in another line.
