Abstract

PURPOSE: To wash an ion exchange membrane effectively without causing the degradation in the performance of the membrane by washing the contaminated ion exchange membrane with an aqueous soln. contg. surfactants and hypohalogenate.
CONSTITUTION: Surfactants are used by arbitrarily combining one or ≥2 kinds of known anionic surfactants, nonionic surfactants, amphoteric ion surfactants or cationic surfactants. Mo1. wts. are preferably about 200W5,000 and concns. are 100W8,000ppm. Hypohalogenate is used by an aqueous soln. of halogen elements such as, for example, chlorine and bromine, sodium hypochlorite alone or in mixture. The concns. thereof are 10W800ppm in available halogen concn. The pH of the aqueous soln. of surfactants and hypohalogenate is 10W13. The ion exchange membrane to be washed may be any kind of cation exchange membrane and anion exchange membrane, but the specific permselective cation exchange membrane is particularly effective.
