Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain high-purity indole useful as a raw material of perfumery, etc. easily in high efficiency, from the mixture of indole, hydrocarbons, etc., by using faujasite-type zeolite as an absorbent, toluene, etc. as the eluent I, and anisole, etc. as the eluent II.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture consisting of indole and hydrocarbons and/or their derivatives is brought into contact with a faujasite-type zeolite, and the selectively absorbed indole is treated with the eluent I consisting of a compound of formula (R1 is 1W3C alkyl; R2 is H or 1W3C alkyl), e.g. toluene to desorb the components having weak adsorptive affinity other than indole. After the treatment, the absorbent adsorbed with indole is treated with the eluent II consisting of a 2W10C aliphatic or aromatic ether, ester or ketone (especially, anisole) to desorb and recover the indole. High purity indole can be recovered by this process from the mixture such as coal tar fraction.
