Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the titled substance useful as an intermediate for a musky perfume civetone in high yield, by the olefinic metathetic reaction of an inexpensive triglyceride, e.g. olive oil, while eliminating unsaturated hydrocarbons formed from the reaction system under high vacuum.
CONSTITUTION: A triglyceride containing oleic, linoleic and linolenic acids as chief component fatty acids, e.g. olive, tsubaki or soybean oil, is subjected to the olefinic metathetic reaction in the presence of a catalyst consisting of tungsten hexachloride and a tetraalkyltin while eliminating unsaturated hydrocarbons formed under reduced pressure from the reaction system (dis)continuosly. The resultant product is then treated with an alcoholic alkali metal alcoholate, e.g. sodium methylate, to give the titled substance. The reaction proceeds in two stages (A) and (B), and the conversion may reach to 80% or higher by the elimination of the unsaturated hydrocarbons expressed by the formula R-C=C-R.
