Abstract

PURPOSE: To reduce size and facilitate production without degrading propagation charcteristics of light by removing the minute portion of the clad part of an optical fiber and interposing a medium in this minute portion.
CONSTITUTION: The clad part 2 of an optical fiber is partially removed and a film 9 having a refractive index higher than that of the core part 1 and elasticity is installed in this portion. This elastic film 9 is pressed by a piston 10 to draw out light to the outside. When this elastic film 9 is not in contact to the core part 1, the light L1 does not radiate light to the outside. As against this, in the state where the elastic film 9 is pressed by the piston 10, the refractive index of the outside becomes higher than the refractive index of the core part 1 and therefore part of the propagating light L2 is radiated to the outside through that portion. In this way, light is drawn out only at the desired time and therefore the device may be miniaturized and its production facilitated without degrading the propagation characteristics of light.
