PURPOSE: To obtain the title substance an intermediate for the preparation of various chemicals, e.g. orotic acid, as crystals in high yield, by reacting glyoxal monoureine with glyoxylic acid at a specific hydrogen ion concentration.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of glyoxalmonoureine of formula I is reacted with 0.3W 3mol, preferably 0.5W1.5mol of glyoxilic acid in an acidic region of pH≤5, preferably ≤2, at 70W110°C, preferably 80W105°C, to give the title compound of formula III. The glyoxalmonoureine is readily obtained by reacting glyoxal with urea.
