Abstract

PURPOSE: Polyester is heat-treated under specific conditions with the flow of inert gas to reduce the contents of aldehydes and oligomers.
CONSTITUTION: A polyester of more than 0.5 intrinsic viscosity, preferably, polyethylene terephthalate with a bulk density of 0.6W0.9g/ml, is heat-treated under the flow of inert gas, preferably nitrogen gas, at a ratio of 1W500, preferably 1W 300l/hr.kg of the polyester in the temperature range from 180°C to lower than the melting point, preferably from 190°C to 240°C to reduce the content of aldehydes to less than 10ppm and/or oligomers to less than 0.5wt%. When the polyester is heat treated, the change in intrinsic viscosity of the polyester is required to satisfy the equation ([η]0 and [η] are the intrinsic viscosities before and after the heat treatment respectively).
