Abstract

PURPOSE: To efficiently and economically oxidize dithionate ions to sulfate ions by a method wherein dithionate ion-containing waste water, while being heated under pressure, is contacted with oxygen gas in the presence of specific amount of transition metal catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Dithionate-containing waste water from a smoke desulfurization plant, or the like, is added with at least one of transition metal ions such as iron and nickel in amount of about 50W1000ppm as catalyst. The water is then contacted with oxygen-containing gas under a pressure of about 0.5W10kg/cm2 and at a temperature over 100°C. This allows dithionate ions to be oxidized into sulfate ions. In this manner, dithionate ions are effectively and economically removed, thereby reducing COD in waste water.
