Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a starting material for tocopherol, in high purity and yield, by separating the reaction mixture produced through the oxidation of 2,3,6-trimethylphenol with O2 in a specific solvent.
CONSTITUTION: 2,3,6-Trimethylphenol is oxidized with O2 or a gas comprising O2, in an aqueous solution containing 30W75wt% of a polyoxyethylene glycol derivative of the formula (R1 and R2 are H or 1W5C lower alkyl; n is 4W50), in the presence of a catalyst comprising copper, e.g. cupric chloride, and halide ions. The reaction mixture thus obtained is separated in to an organic layer containing 2,3,5-trimethylquinone as a chief component and an aqueous layer containing the catalyst and polyoxyethylene glycol derivative, and the organic layer is steam-distilled to obtain the object compound. After separating high-boiling by-products from the aqueous layer and the bottoms of the steam distillation, the aqueous solution can be recycled and reused in the oxidation step.
