Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a magnetic powder having coercive force of 1000 Oe or more and to enhance the output of short wavelength recording in a magnetic record midium by depositing a cobalt compound on the surface of cobalt-containing magnetic powder.
CONSTITUTION: Co-containing iron oxide particulates and a Co salt are mixed and heated in an alkaline solution to allow the surface of the iron oxide particulates to be deposited with Co compounds consisting of Co hydroxide, Co oxide, or their intermediate compounds. The formed products are dehydrated and dried to provide a magnetic powder. It is preferable to form the magnetic powder so as to satisfy a relation Hca≥ΔHcd, where ΔHca and ΔHcd are each coercive force increment caused by Co inclusion and Co deposition respectively. In this way, the coercive force of the formed magnetic powder can be added with the coercive force which has been already enhanced due to the Co inclusion, thus resulting in a magnetic powder having 1000 Oe or greater. The magnetic powder is coated on a magnetic recording medium to provide an increased output in short wavelength recording.
