Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain low molar ratio fluoride for use in manufacture of Al by electrolysis without forming a viscous melt in a high yield with high work efficiency by mixing Al2O3 into a mixt. of cryolite and al (SO4)3 followed by heating.
CONSTITUTION: Al2O3 (C) is mixed into a mixt. of cryolite (A) and Al2(SO4)3 (B) and heated to 550°C or above to produce fluoride (D) having a compsn. with a molar ratio of NaF to AlF3 of 3 or less. The fluoride (D) includes AlF3, various mixts. of AlF3 and 5NaF.3AlF3 (chiolite), and chiolite. The mixing ratio of (A) and (B) is adjusted to a molar ratio of (B) to (A) of 0.5W0.6 and about 0.15 in case of AlF3 and chiolite, respectively. In case of various mixts., the mixing ratio is decided by calculation on the basis of the above molar ratios. The amt. of (C) is generally in a wt. ratio of (C) to (A) of 0.8 or more. The reaction temp. is 550W800, pref. 600W700°C.
