Abstract
PURPOSE:To achieve hardening to a depth equal to, or larger than, that obtained by water-immersion hardening without causing quenching cracks, by placing the steel material to be hardened in a cooling water tank, and by cooling it by water spray and compressed air injection with the Ms point as a border. CONSTITUTION:Water pipes 7 having many water spray nozzles 6 and compressed air pipes 9 having many fog graft nozzles 8 are installed vertically in a cooling tank 4 which is provided with a rotatble bottom plate 5. Hot steel material 2 to be hardened is placed in the cooling tank 4 and is rotated by the bottom plate 5 at 4- 15r.p.m. Simultaneously the steel material 2 is cooled by spraying water through the water spray nozzles. The temp. of the steel material 2 is continuously measured by a thermocouple 10. When the steel material is cooled to a set temp. just above the Ms point, the water spray nozzles are closed, and the steel 2 is cooled by compressed air injection through the fog graft nozzles 8. When the surface temp. exceeds the set temp. just above the Ms point by recuperation, the steel 2 is cooled once again by the water spray. Repetition of these cooling operations causes water quenching with a small difference between the temps. of the center portion and the surface of the steel material.
