Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title compound having excellent filterability, in high purity and yield, by sulfonating β-bromoethylbenzene with anhydrous sulfuric acid in the presence of alkyl sulfate, and reacting the product with an alkali metal hydroxide in water.
CONSTITUTION: β-Bromoethylbenzene is sulfonated with anhydrous sulfuric acid in a solvent such as methylene chloride, in the presence of an alkyl sulfate of formula (R1,2 are H or 1W4C alkyl). The sulfonated product is reacted with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide such as NaOH at about 100°C, and filtered to obtain styrenesulfonic acid alkali metal salt. The sulfonation reaction is carried out in the presence of an organic carboxylic acid, at 10W50°C. The amount of the alkyl sulfate is 0.05W0.5% of the anhydrous sulfauric acid. The objective compound having excellent filterability is prepared in high reproducibility.
