PURPOSE: To provide an internal combustion engine, which is designed such that center of rotation of crank shaft is displaceable and compression ratio can be changed corresponding to the engine load, whereby fuel consumption can be lowered in low-load region and occurrence of knocking can be prevented in high-load region.
CONSTITUTION: When control gear 17 is turned by a suitable measn corresponding to the load charactrristics of engine or the like, eccentric sleeve 13 fitted on journal 9b of crank shaft 9 is turned around the center As of rotation. This causes turning of journal 9b, so that center Ac of rotation of shaft 9 is displaced and vertical dis-between these points As and Ac is changed. As the result, stroke of piston 3 supported on crank pin 9a by the intermediary of connecting rod 7 is changed and therefore compression ratio of the engine can be changed.
