Abstract

PURPOSE: A thermoplastic and elastic polymer composition that is made by mixing with heat a butyl rubber and an ethylene-propylene copolymer rubber in the presence of an organic peroxide resulting in partial crosslinking, thus having high elastic, thermal and melt-flowing properties.
CONSTITUTION: A mixture consisting of a butyl rubber, such as butyl rubber or polyisobutylene rubber, an ethylene-propylene copolymer rubber is blended with heat in the presence of an organic peroxide resulting in partial crosslinking. The thermoplastic and elastic polymer composition has good compatibility to polyolefin as polyethylene or polypropylene and nylon 12 and the blended products show improved flexibility, especially much improved shock resistance at lower temperature. Further, said polymer composition can be incorporated with a tackfier as coumarone- indene resin or terpene resin to give a hot-melt adhesive and sealant.
