Abstract

PURPOSE:To raise the efficiency of cooling or heat absorption of a coolant, by providing numerous circumferential narrow grooves on the inside of a metal pipe. CONSTITUTION:A metal band 1 for manufacturing the metal pipe is positioned by a pair of guide rollers 2 and passed through between a grooving roller 3 and a driving roller 4 which forcedly feeds the metal band. Projections of trapezoidal cross section are provided on the peripheral surface of the grooving roller 3 so that the projections extend in parallel with the axis of the roller. The narrow grooves 5 of trapezoidal cross section are continuously produced on one side of the metal band 1 so that the grooves extend in parallel with each other and perpendicularly to the longitudinal direction of the band. The band is then rounded by a pipe making machine. Both the side edges of the band are welded on each other, thereby making the metal pipe. When ammonia gas flows into the pipe, the flow is disturbed because of the numerous narrow grooves 5 on the inside surface of the pipe so that the velocity of the flow falls and the time of passing of the gas through the pipe is lengthened. Since the inside surface area of the pipe is increased, the capacity of heat exchange is raised.
