Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a polyester useful for injection molding, etc. and giving a thick molded article having excellent transparency, by carrying out the polycondensation reaction in the presence of a germanium compound, an amine compound and a specific diol compound.
CONSTITUTION: 1Mol of a germanium compound, e.g. germanium dioxide, is dissolved in 0.3W1mol of a tertiary or quaternary amine, e.g. trimethylamine, which vaporizes at ≤280°C. The mixture is added to the product prepared by esterifying an acid component consisting mainly of terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol, wherein the amount of the germanium compound is 0.005W0.2mol% on the basis of the acid component. Pref. 0.1W10wt%, based on the resultant polymer, of a compound expressed by the formula (n=5W12), e.g. 1,6-hexanediol, etc., is further added and the composition is subjected to polycondensation to give the desired polyester.
