Abstract

PURPOSE: To considerably remove malodor by contacting malodorous gas with zinc oxide under radiation of ultraviolet rays.
CONSTITUTION: Contacting of malodorous gas under radiation of ultraviolet rays is accomplished by vapor-liquid contact by a scrubbing solution of pH2W13 containing zinc oxide at concentrations 0.005W5 (preferably 0.01W5)wt% or vapor- solid contact method by a stationary bed of zinc oxide. Apparatus are not limited in type as long as they are capable of containing an ultraviolet light source therein. The grain sizes of zinc oxide can be 100W400 mesh and the wavelength of ultraviolet rays is kept in the range absorbed by zinc oxide, i.e., 400 or under. The applicable malodorous gases are sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, etc., nitrogen compounds such as dimethyl amine, etc., hydrocarbons such as aldehydes, etc. and this method is particularly effectual for removing methyl sulfide, acetaldehyde, etc. which are difficult to remove with acids and alkalies.
