Abstract

PURPOSE:To make it possible to easily and reliably quantitize guanidines by adding benzoin to a sample thereby to effect thermal reaction and by measuring the fluorescent intensity of the reacted mixture. CONSTITUTION:Benzoin, which is dissolved in a solvent such as dimethyl formamide, is added to a sample containing mono-substituted guanidine thereby to effect the thermal reaction in a boiling water bath in the presence of alkali for 40-50 minutes. Preferably, mercaptoethanol is added in the form of its aqueous solution to the reacted mixture, and then the fluorescent intensity is measured. In this method, the maximum wavelengths of excitation and of fluorescence are constant at 320- 328nm and 434-437nm, respectively, and the difference inbetween is so large, e.g., about 110 nm that it can be measured in a visible range in a simple manner.
