Abstract

PURPOSE: To convert incinerated ashes to harmless products 1 inexpensively by cooling the incinerated ashes containing hexavalent chrominum and free alkali and carrying out the reduction and the neutralization of the ashes in a predetermined amount of a mixed solution containing ferrous sulfate and sulfuric acid at a predetermined concentration.
CONSTITUTION: After cooling incinerated ashes containing hexavalent chrominm and Na salt, an aqueous solution containing ferrous sulfate at a concentration of 0.5 to 5% and sulfuric acid at a concentration of 2 to 10%, is spray-added to the ashes. Ferrous sulfate is used in an amount ranging 3 to 4 times the equivalent amount of hexavalent chronium and sulfuric acid is used in an amount of at least 1.5 times preferably ranging 2 to 3 times the equivalent amount of free alkali. The incinerated ashes are reduced at a temperature of 70 to 90°C for one to two hours to complete the neutralization, whereby hexavalent chromium is reduced to harmless trivalent chromium. A treating tank having a large capacity and a dehydrator used in prior arts are not necessary and the cost of equipment and the expense of operation can be reduced. This process is characterized by that the reduction and the neutralization are carried out simultaneously. Otherwise, the reduction does not proceed.
