Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare ethoxysilane, particularly triethoxysilane, industrially advantageously, by reacting silicon with ethyl alcohol (E) in the presence of a copper catalyst in a solvent while maintaining the water content in E at a specific value or below.
CONSTITUTION: Silicon is reacted with ethyl alcohol containing 2,000ppm or less, preferably 1,500ppm or less, of water in the system, obtained by removing the water with a dehydrating agent, e.g. zeolite or fractional distillation, in the presence of a copper catalyst in a solvent in an enclosed system to give an ethoxysilane of formula I, II, III, or IV, preferably III. In case the copper catalyst is cuprous chloride, it is preferably pretreated with one or more types of complexing compounds of nitriles, naphthalenes, biphenyls, and anthracenes.
EFFECT: Particularly, triethoxysilane is obtained with a high selectivity, conversion, and reaction rate of silicon.
