Abstract
PURPOSE: To easily produce powder glass from a difficult raw material compsn. to convert into glass by melting the compsn. after which the melt is atomized with a spouting stream of gas or liquid and cooled rapidly.
CONSTITUTION: The above compsn. is pulverized, charged into crucible 1, and melted by external heating at about 1400°C. This melt is supplied into cooling chamber 4 through outlet 3 as a melt stream with pressurized inert gas such as Ar fed from valve 2. At this time, the melt stream is atomized with gas or liquid spouted from spary nozzles 5, 5' set at both sides of outlet 3 through valves 6, 6'. The atomized stream is contacted to cooling water 7, cooled, and converted into powder glass, which is recovered from the bottom of chamber 4. The raw material compsn., e.g. consists of acidic oxides such as B2O3, SiO2 and P2O5, and basic oxides such as Na2O and K2O may be blended.
