Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a carboxylic acid ester from an alcohol, stably, in high selectivity, in a single step, by using a catalyst containing a compound of Pb or Tl and metallic Pd.
CONSTITUTION: A carboxylic acid ester (e.g. ethyl acetate) is prepared in high yield (e.g. 42.5%) by the catalytic oxidation of alcohols containing at least one primary alcohol (e.g. ethanol), with O2-containing gas in the presence of a catalyst comprising metallic Pd and a compound of Pb or Tl (e.g. 5% of Pd and 3% of Pb(OAc)2 supported by carbon). The reaction proceeds only by introducing oxygen into the reaction system at 20W150°C under atmospheric pressure. The catalyst keeps its activity for a long time, and can be prepared from a low-cost metal such as Pb.
