Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a steel ingot having superior surface quality and internal characteristics by introducing part of molten steel into a vacuum tank, and returning it again to a mold to thereby degas the molten steel.
CONSTITUTION: A small vacuum tank 2 lined with refractory material on the inner surface thereof is mounted at an optimum upper position of an ingot mold 1 filled with molten steel. When the vacuum tank 2 and connecting vacuum tube 3 are not sufficiently heated, they are preheated in advance prior to the suction of the molten steel into the vacuum tank 2. When an evacuating facility 4 is driven to reduce the pressure in the vacuum tank 2 the molten steel flown into the vacuum tank 2 is degassed through the suction tube 3 in response to the reduced pressure degree. Then, gas is blown into the suction tube 3 to thereby circulate the molten steel in the vacuum tank 2 into the mold 2. Thus, the molten steel in the mold 1 is treated to thereby produce steel ingot of high quality.
