Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a friction material in which the binder is made flexible so as to prevent vibration, by a method wherein a thermosetting resin and a rubber latex are added to a base material such as asbestos, inorg. filler, or metal powder.
CONSTITUTION: A thermosetting resin and a rubber latex are added to a base material such as asbestos, inorg. filler or metal powder. The mixt. is kneaded and molded. The rubber latex is used in an amount of 5W30wt% (based on the weight of whole materials of the blended product, solid. When the amount of the rubber latex is less than 5wt%, the rubber has no effect on the prevention of vibration for the lack of flexibility as the binder for a friction material. When the amount of the latex is more than 30wt%, wear resistance is lowered at an elevated temperature, curing time during molding is prolonged and productivity is lowered. Asbestos other than poweder asbestos is previously crushed and then used. Examples of the inorg. fillers are barium sulfate, graphite, and silica and used in the form of a powder. Examples of the metal powders are the powders of copper or brass.
