Abstract
PURPOSE: To enable to keep a sufficiently large opening area of scavenging ports and a sifficiently long valve opening time if the starting point for opening the scavenging ports is delayed, by controlling opening and closing of upper ones of a scavenging ports, arranged in upper and lower two rows in the cylinder liner, by means of a control ring which is moved intermittently.
CONSTITUTION: With the time point for starting "opening" of exhaust valve being delayed as compared with that employed in conventional engines, high-pressure exhausting of combustion gas is started at an crank angle θ5. Although upper scavenging ports 12 are opened by piston 3 in the above high-pressure exhausting of combustion gas, scavenging is not started since control ring 14 is closed. When the crank angle becomes θ6 after passing of the above high-pressure exhausting of combustion gas having time length substantially equal to that of conventional engines, lower scavening ports 13 are opened. At the same time, turret 20 beings to turn and causes turning of control ring 14 via shaft 17 and pinion 16, so that upper scavenging ports 12 also begins to open. Rotation of turret 20 is continued until piston 3 comes to the bottom dead point and the lower scavenging ports 13 are fully opened (1/2 of the pitch of scavenging ports), but rotation of turret 20 is once interrupted at the point.
