NEW MATERIAL:3-[ 7aβ-Methyl-5-oxo-1β-( 1α-methyl-2-oxopropyl )-3aαH-hexahydroindan-4α-yl]propionic acid (hereinafter called IP) of formula.
USE: Raw material for the synthesis of steroid-type medicines such as steroid hormones, or bioactive substance having similar structure to the above medicine. Agricultural microbicides effective remarkably to the gray-mold of vegetables and fruit trees.
PROCESS: A mutant of bacteria belonging to Rhodococcus genus, such as Rhodococcus corallinus MCI-1164, wherein the IP-decomposing enzyme is eliminated or deactivated, is cultured in a medium containing steroles as substrates, and the cultured product is extracted with an organic solvent to obtain the objective IP. The sterole is e.g. sterole, its C-3 ester derivative, C-3 ether derivative, or their oxidation intermediates.
