Abstract

PURPOSE:To measure the wave height of the surface of the water located at a long distance from a fixed point on the ground, etc. without providing the navigation of shipping with obstacles, by irradiating laser rays on the surface of the sea or the surface of the water of rivers, and by obtaining the information of wave height from thrown-back reflections gained. CONSTITUTION:When keeping the spread angles of laser beams constant, the numbers of stripes 2' are comparatively few as striped patterns 6-1 when wave height is high because the reflections of waves observed by laser rays irradiated are formed as a line of beltlike reflections about one mount of waves arranging in row- like shapes. When wave height is low, on the contrary, the numbers of the stripes 2' become more as striped patterns 6-2. Meanwhile, relationship between the wave length and wave height of the water area to be measured is beforehand obtained using wind velocity, wind direction, tides, etc. as parameters because wave length has a strong element related to wave height and is characterized by regional groups. Thus, wave height can be gained by measuring the numbers of the stripes of reflections with striped patterns formed on an image-formation plate 6 and the moving directions.
