Abstract
PURPOSE:To manufacture a long-sized optical fiber base material with high mechanical strength by separating a heat source for heating glass forming gaseous compounds to synthesize glass fine particles from a heat source for sintering the particles. CONSTITUTION:Glass forming gaseous compounds such as SiCl4 and GeCl4 fed into synthesizing torch 21 are converted into glass fine particles by hydrolysis or other reaction in a flame formed with combustion gases such as O2 and H2 or a hot gas stream of O2, He, Ar, H2O, etc., forming glass fine particle stream 22. Stream 22 hits against starting substrate 27, and particles deposite on the substrate 27 surface. Simultaneously with the deposition they are sintered with light beams such as CO2 laser beams or infrared rays emitted from sintering heat source 23 such as halogen lamp and extended with lens 24, growing porous glass body 26.
