Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, an intermediate of prophylactics of arteriosclerosis and thrombosis, easily and in high yield in a short period in one step, by treating 3, 5-dimethyltrimellitic acid trialkyl ester with conc. sulfuric acid.
CONSTITUTION: The title compound is obtained by treating 3, 5-dimethyltrimellitic acid trialkyl ester of the formula (R, R1, R2=lower alkyl) with conc. sulfuric acid of a concentration of ≥80wt%. The yield increases with the concentration. Highly concentrated fuming sulfuric acid should be diluted to a SO3 concentration of ≤120 wt% to prevent the side reations.
