Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce the growth of fish tail, and to improve the yield, by smashing slab's four corners by the vertical roll before beginning the width-reducing rolling, and then by carrying out the width-reducing rolling. CONSTITUTION:The tip of the slab 1 is thrust against the vertical roll 3, and the roll 3 is turned round to smash the corners of the tip by a specified amount. Next, the vertical roll 3 is moved outside, and the roll gap L is widened to more than the slab's breadth; and the slab 1 is sent to the front of the vertical mill, and the vertical roll 3 is moved toward the center in order to set the roll gap L at the required condition; and the rear end of the slab 1 is thrust against the vertical roll 3 in order to smash the corner of the rear end by a required amount. Next, the vertical roll 3 is moved outside, the roll gap L is enlarged, and the slab 1 is sent behind the vertical mill; and the roll gap L is narrowed to the required condition, and then, the width-reducing rolling is carried out. The fish tail 2 of the slab 1 after undergoing the rolling becomes small.
