Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance cutting properties through reduced mechanical anisotropy by incorporating into a free-cutting steel interposing materials having a high melting or softening point and a lower melting point, so as to form a specific configuration.
CONSTITUTION: An interposing material A such as Pb, Bi, SiO2K2O, etc. which softens or melts below 1,000°C and an interposing material B such as MnS, MnSe, etc. which melts above 1,300°C and is plastic at 900W1,300°C are throughly mixed in volume ratio of 1:100W150:100. The mixture is added and dispersed into molten steel which is forcedly stirred by blowing non-oxidizing gas. The process provides a free-cutting steel in which the interposing material A and B exist in mutually adhered state and is adjusted to have the surface ratio of the material A exceeding 1% of that of the material B. This method applies to structural carbon steel, alloy steel, heat resistant steel, stainless steel, bearing steel, tool steel, and spring steel.
