Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound economically and safely as a precursor of a raw material for a tetracyanoquinodimethane useful for a super conductor, by catalytic hydrogenation of a 3,3,6,6-tetramethoxy-1,4-cyclohexadiene, in the presence of a metal selected from group VIII in the periodic table as a catalyst, under mild conditions.
CONSTITUTION: A 3,3,6,6-tetramethoxy-1,4-cyclohexadine of formula I (R is H, alkyl or halogen) is catalytically hydrogenated with hydrogen in the presence of a metal selected group VIII in the periodic table, preferably palladium, especially supported on active carbon, as a catalyst, in an amount of about 2W5wt% based on the diketal, at about 0.2W10 atm, preferably at 0.5W5 atm, more preferably 0.5W 2 atm, at about 5W60°C, preferably 15W50°C, to give a compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is, for example, produced by the anodic oxidation of p-hydroquinone dimethyl ether in the solvent of methanolic potassium hydroxide.
