Abstract

PURPOSE: In the two-step reaction between C4 fraction containing isobutene and methanol in the presence of an acid catalyst, the supply of the feedstocks is done in a specific way to produce titled compound of very low methanol content in spite of fluctuation of isobutene content in the C4 fraction.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction of C4 fraction with an excess amount of methanol (1.2W5 times the molar amount of the isobutene) is carried out in the first reactor 10 containing a catalyst of ion-exchange resin. The reaction mixture is sent to the first distillation column and unreacted C4 fraction is collected from the column top, methanol from the bottom and methyl tertiarybutyl ether (MTBE) from the middle part as a eutectic composition. Unreacted methanol is combined with make- up methanol by an amount of consumed methanol and recycled to the first reactor 10. The eutectic composition is incorporated with C4 fraction so that the isobutene in the fraction becomes 1.3W5 times the moles of methanol and they are converted into MTBE in the second reactor 3 and MTBE is obtained from the bottom of the second distillation column 5. The unreacted C4 fraction from the column top is recycled to reactor 10.
