Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a hydrogel, of high water-absorption, which is useful for a disposable diaper, tampon, a separating agent for water in oil, a water-retaining agent for soil, etc., by the copolymerization of a water-soluble (meth)acrylate and a water-insoluble ethylenic monomer.
CONSTITUTION: 95W10pts.wt. of a water-soluble (meth)acrylate (e.g., Na salt, K salt) and 5W90pts. wt. of a water-insoluble ethylenic monomer (e,g., methyl acrylate, styrene), are copolymerized, to obtain a hydrogel which absorbs water more than ten times its own weight. The polymerization is preferably carried out by suspending the monomer, a catalyst and, if necessary, a crosslinking agent (e.g., 1,4-divinylbenzene, etc.) in water, and atomizing the suspension into an inert gas at 100W250°C, or distributing it on a moving surface in the form of a film.
EFFECT: It is possible to industrially and easily obtain an innoxious hydrogel, which can be used in water-containing conditions, for a long period of time without putrefaction.
