Abstract
PURPOSE: To enable the detection of twodimensional displacement or position through a simple construction, by using a magnetoelectric transducing element and a magnetic scale provided with a twoidimensional magnetic lattice and by obtaining an output signal corresponding to the displacement.
CONSTITUTION: N-pole magnetized portions 5 and S-pole magnetized portions 6 are alternately provided in a magnetic scale 1 so that the magnetized portions 5, 6 are placed in longitudinal and latitudinal directions. A signaling magnetic field HSX of λx in wavelength is produced in the latitudinal direction between the magnetized portions 5, 6. A magnetic lattice is provided to apply the signaling magnetic field to a the magnetoelectric transducing element 2. The resistance of the electrical current passage 7 of the transducer 2 is changed depending on a bias current IB and the direction of magnetization. At that time, a detection signal whose level is repeatedly altered depending on the wavelength of λx appears in the current passage 7 due to the displacement of the converter 2. The signal is detected. A position in the latitudinal direction can thus be identified by the relative movement of the transducer 2. A position in the longitudinal direction can be also identified in the same manner.
