Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide watch glass strong against force applied from the top face and therefore strong in use by a method wherein inorganic glass for watch is curved at the center section and dipped into molten salt containing potassium nitrate.
CONSTITUTION: A watch cover glass 1 is fixed in a fixture 2, supported at the periphery of glass bottom face, and is pressed at the center section of the top surface. This applies compressive stress on the top surface and tensile stress on the bottom face. The so fixed glass is preheated, dipped into molten salt and held there, then cooled in air, washed with water to remove KNO3, is dried, and removed from the fixture. In this process, tensile stress in the glass bottom face allows faster ion-exchange rate than that in no stressed condition. This results in more of potassium ions exchanged with sodium ions and produces compressive stress higher at the bottom than the top surface, in condition the glass is removed from the fixture after chemical reinforcing process.
